Pedestrian Killed in East Baton Rouge Parish Crash

Zachary Shortly after midnight on July 14, 2013, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on LA Hwy 67 north of Port Hudson-Pride Road in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 24 year old Britt L. Efferson of Central.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Efferson was walking along LA Hwy 67. At the same time, 25 year old Michael Parker of Zachary was driving a 2003 GMC pickup truck northbound on LA Hwy 67. Efferson stepped into the northbound lane of travel in an attempt to flag down a vehicle, and Parker was unable to avoid striking him as he stepped into the roadway.

Efferson sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Impairment on the part of Efferson is suspected, and Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from him to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Impairment on the part of Parker is not suspected to be a factor, and he was not cited in the crash.

Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians.
