The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Lacasse was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck northbound on S. Satsuma Rd. At the same time, 56 year old Mark Flaugher of Clinton was driving a 1996 Mack truck eastbound on US 190. Lacasse approached the stop sign at S. Satsuma Rd. and US 190 and was attempting to make a left turn to travel west on US 190. Lacasse failed to stop at the stop sign, and pulled directly into the path of the Mack truck. Flaugher attempted to avoid striking the Chevrolet pickup, but was unable to do so. The Mack truck struck the Chevrolet on the driver’s side door, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway and enter into a ditch.

Despite the fact that she was wearing a seatbelt, Lacasse suffered fatal injuries from the crash. Flaugher was properly restrained and was uninjured. An infant passenger in Lacasse’s vehicle was properly restrained, and was transported to a local hospital with only minor injuries. Troopers do not suspect impairment to have been a factor on the part of either driver; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving at all times. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued. Always remain buckled up while in a vehicle, regardless of seating position. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road, and always obey all traffic control devices.
