TROOP A NEWS RELEASE August 9, 2013 Motorcyclist Killed in West Baton Rouge Parish Fatal Crash Port Allen – This morning shortly after 12:15 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred on US Hwy 190 west of LA Hwy 1145 in West Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 50 year old Port Vincent resident Joseph W. Landry. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Landry (who was riding a 2004 Assm motorcycle) pulled out of the Cajun Circus parking lot to travel westbound on US 190. At the same time, 67 year old Andrew Spears of Baton Rouge was driving a 2005 Freightliner tractor-trailer westbound on US 190 in the right hand lane. Landry pulled into the path of Spears and was struck in the rear by the Freightliner. Landry was wearing a helmet, but it was not a DOT approved safety helmet. He suffered fatal injuries from the crash. Impairment on his part is not suspected; however, Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from him to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Spears was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash, and impairment on his part is not suspected. Troopers urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure that they are properly prepared and trained for a variety of riding conditions. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices such as being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their bike. Motorcyclists are taught how to apply these safety practices to not only avoid being involved in a crash but to greatly reduce the chance of injury should a crash occur.
