TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE August 21, 2012 Pedestrian Struck, Killed in Livingston Parish Crash Independence – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian last night shortly after 9:00 pm. The crash occurred on LA 442 west of LA 43 at the intersection of Stilley Road in Livingston Parish and claimed the life of an Independence woman. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, being driven by Melody Elkins (W/F, age 43) of Hammond, was traveling west on LA 442. The SUV struck Marilyn Garnett (W/F, age 55) of Independence, who was walking in the roadway at the intersection of LA 442 and Stilley Road. Garnett was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. Troopers do no suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the crash. However, a sample of Garnett’s blood has been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Elkins voluntarily submitted a breath sample to Troopers that showed she had no detectable alcohol in her system. State Troopers have investigated several pedestrian fatalities across the state this year, and most of them occurred during the hours of darkness. Troopers remind motorists to remain vigilant while driving in all conditions, to be aware of their surroundings, and to always ensure they are properly restrained. It is extremely important for pedestrians to pay close attention to what is going on around them. They should wear light-colored reflective clothing and walk only in well-lit areas against the flow of traffic. Contact Information: TFC Russell G. Graham II | |||
