TROOP A NEWS RELEASE March 25, 2014 “Consequences of Impact”- Mock Crash at East Ascension High School Gonzales – On Wednesday, March 26, 2014, students from East Ascension High School will participate in “Consequences of Impact,” a mock crash depicting the consequences of impaired driving. “Consequences of Impact” will take place at 7:45 am at East Ascension High School, located at 612 E Worthy St. in Gonzales. Students involved will act out a fatal crash scenario in front of their peers, allowing the students to see first-hand how drinking, driving and poor decisions affect everyone involved. The mock crash will promote open and trusting relationships between parents and teens as parents of the students will also be playing parts in this scenario. “Consequences of Impact” will emphasize the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving, the usage of seat belts and the emotional suffering families endure when a fatal crash occurs in reality. Numerous state and local agencies will partner with Louisiana State Police by providing their expertise to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Trauma Center, Gonzales Police Department, Gonzales Fire and EMS, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office, Acadian Ambulance, Gonzales Towing, and Ourso Funeral Home will participate in the scenario. Personnel from each agency will be available to answer all of the student’s questions at the conclusion of the event. This educational event is an effort to reduce the number of underage DWI’s, serious injury crashes and fatal crashes. Programs, such as “Consequences of Impact” teach our youth the importance of making sound decisions throughout the course of their lives. “Consequences of Impact” is a reinforcement activity that is promoted through the Sudden Impact Program offered, through a partnership, by the Louisiana State Police and Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Trauma Center. The Sudden Impact Program is an eight-hour program for high school sophomores dedicated to the prevention of injuries and fatalities related to driving under the influence and seatbelt usage. The Sudden Impact program targets teens (high school sophomores) that are in the process of obtaining their driver’s license. Students are exposed to the hospital setting and interact with presenters through hand held computers. Presentations by medical staff and Troopers emphasize the reality of injury and fatal crashes and the lifelong consequences victims and families confront every day. Students meet a trauma victim and are told of the challenges they face on a daily basis. The students are then taken to the Trauma ICU and Emergency Department where they go bed-side with a trauma patient so they can witness first-hand the consequences of poor decision making in a motor vehicle. The Sudden Impact Program has received several awards and is listed in Louisiana’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan. The program is conducted nearly every week at OLOL and reinforcement activities are scheduled throughout the school year. **All media outlets are invited and encouraged to attend.** Contact Information: | |||
