Denham Springs Woman Killed in East Baton Rouge Parish Fatal Crash

Baton Rouge Shortly after 11:00 pm on March 27, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating two separate crashes, the second of which was a fatal, that occurred on US Hwy 61 south of Industriplex Blvd. in East Baton Rouge Parish. The fatal crash took the life of 28 year old Kristina A. Delaney of Denham Springs.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the first crash occurred as Delaney was attempting to pull out of a private driveway in a 2008 Honda Civic to travel southbound on US Hwy 61. At the same time, 38 year old Alonzo Williams of Gonzales was driving southbound on US Hwy 61 in a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass. As she was attempting to pull onto US Hwy 61, Delaney’s Civic struck the Cutlass, causing the Cutlass to enter the median. After the crash Delaney brought her vehicle to a stop in the roadway and turned the vehicle off.

After Delaney brought her Civic to a stop on US Hwy 61, she exited her vehicle and began to look inside the vehicle interior for her cell phone. At the same time, 30 year old Preyas S. Sevak of Baton Rouge was driving a 2004 Honda CRV southbound on US Hwy 61. Sevak’s CRV struck Delaney’s Civic in the rear. The collision caused the Civic to strike Delaney as she was standing outside of her vehicle.

Delaney sustained fatal injuries as a result of the second crash. Sevak was properly restrained and was uninjured. Driver impairment is not suspected for either driver at this time; however, toxicology samples were taken from both Delaney and Sevak and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Alonzo was properly restrained and was uninjured in the first crash.

Although not all crashes are survivable, Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
