Napoleonville Man Killed in Ascension Parish Head On Crash

Sorrento Shortly before 10:00 am on April 15, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 70 south of LA Hwy 22 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 36 year old Shelby G. Johnson of Napoleonville.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Johnson was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang northbound on LA Hwy 70. At the same time, 40 year old Donna Dunaway of Gonzales was driving southbound on LA Hwy 70 in a 2006 Mack dump truck. For unknown reasons Johnson’s northbound Mustang crossed over the center line into the southbound lane of travel and struck the Mack truck head on.

Despite the fact that he was wearing his seatbelt Johnson sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Dunaway was properly restrained and was uninjured. Driver impairment is not suspected for either driver at this time; however, toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Although not all crashes are survivable, Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
