TROOP A NEWS RELEASE

Motorcycle Passenger Killed in Livingston Parish Crash

French Settlement Shortly before 1:00 pm on March 7, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred on LA Hwy 16 north of LA Hwy 22 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 33 year old Charlotte R. Cole of Baton Rouge.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 45 year old Baton Rouge resident Thomas E. Cole, Jr., (Charlotte Cole’s husband) was riding a 2011 Kawasaki Vaquero motorcycle southbound on LA Hwy 16. As Cole approached a left hand curve, his motorcycle ran off the roadway to the right for unknown reasons. As a result both Thomas and Charlotte Cole (the passenger) were ejected from the motorcycle.

Despite the fact that both Thomas and Charlotte Cole were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, Charlotte Cole suffered fatal injuries. Thomas Cole suffered serious injuries, and was airlifted from the scene to Baton Rouge General Medical Center on Bluebonnet. Impairment on the part of Thomas Cole is not suspected; however, Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from him to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Troopers urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure that they are properly prepared and trained for a variety of riding conditions. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices such as being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their motorcycle. Motorcyclists are taught how to apply these safety practices to not only avoid being involved in a crash but to greatly reduce the chance of injury should a crash occur.
