TROOP A NEWS RELEASE January 3, 2014 Unrestrained Passenger Killed in Iberville Parish Fatal Crash St. Gabriel – Shortly after 9:00 pm on January 2, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred near the ferry landing on LA Hwy 75 (River Rd.) west of LA Hwy 327 in Iberville Parish. The crash took the life of 24 year old Cedrick D. Smith of Plaquemine. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 23 year old Wilbert Pryer of Plaquemine was driving a 2013 Dodge Charger northbound on LA Hwy 75. For unknown reasons Pryer failed to negotiate a right hand curve, and the Dodge ran off the roadway to the left. The Dodge then entered into a ditch and struck a telephone pole. Both Pryer and Smith were unrestrained at the time of the crash. Pryer suffered minor injuries and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. Smith (the front seat passenger) suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Impairment on the part of Pryer is unknown at this time; however, a toxicology sample was taken from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Excessive speed is considered to have been a factor in the crash. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Contact Information: | |||
