TROOP A NEWS RELEASE January 5, 2014 Child Critically Injured in Ascension Parish Crash Prairieville – Shortly after 8:00 pm on January 5, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle serious injury crash that occurred on US Hwy 61 north of LA Hwy 427 in Ascension Parish. The crash critically injured a 2 year old child. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 18 year old Jonqualya Benton of Prairieville was driving a 2013 Mercedes GLK350 northbound on US Hwy 61. For unknown reasons Benton’s Mercedes ran off the roadway to the right. Once leaving the roadway the Mercedes entered into a ditch where it struck a driveway and overturned. As a result of the crash a 2 year old male child was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge with life threatening injuries. It is unclear at this time if the child was properly restrained in a child safety seat at the time of the crash. Impairment on the part of Benton is unknown at this time; however, a toxicology sample was taken from her and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Excessive speed is considered to have been a factor in the crash, and the crash remains under investigation. Every occupant in a motor vehicle is required by Louisiana law to be properly restrained in a seatbelt or child restraint. Every Louisiana State Police Troop is a grant funded fitting station staffed by nationally certified child safety seat technicians. Each fitting station teaches parents/caregivers how to properly install a child safety seat and how to properly buckle children into the seat. This service is free to the public. Please visit www.lsp.org to find out when your local LSP troop conducts child seat checks. Contact Information: | |||
