TROOP A NEWS RELEASE March 6, 2014 Port Vincent Man Charged with Negligent Homicide in Ascension Parish Fatal Crash Prairieville – At approximately 7:30 am on March 6, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 42 east of LA Hwy 932 (Joe Sevario Rd.) in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 56 year old Sheri B. Thompson of Prairieville. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 24 year old Dalyn P. Melancon of Port Vincent was driving a 2006 Ford F-150 westbound on LA Hwy 42. At the same time, Thompson was driving a 2007 Nissan Altima eastbound on LA Hwy 42. As Melancon entered a curve his F-150 ran off the road to the right. Melancon overcorrected and his vehicle crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane of travel. As a result, Melancon’s F-150 struck Thompson’s Altima head on. Despite the fact that she was properly restrained, Thompson suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Melancon was not properly restrained and suffered moderate injuries. Impairment is not suspected for either driver at this time; however, toxicology samples were taken from both Melancon and Thompson and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Excessive speed is considered to have been a factor in the crash, and Melancon was charged with negligent homicide, careless operation and no seatbelt. While not all crashes are survivable, Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Contact Information: | |||
