TROOP A NEWS RELEASE May 28, 2013 Nighttime Seatbelt Checkpoint Scheduled for Livingston Parish In an effort to increase proper seatbelt usage in our state, Louisiana State Police Troop A and the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office plan to conduct a seatbelt and child restraint compliance checkpoint on Thursday, May 30, 2013, from approximately 7:00 pm to 1:00 am at an undisclosed location in Livingston Parish. The mission of our Troopers and Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard’s deputies will be to find and ticket vehicle occupants who choose to drive unrestrained, and who do not properly restrain their children. The majority of vehicle occupants who die in crashes in our state are not properly wearing a seatbelt, including 15 of the 26 people who have died in crashes investigated by Troop A so far this year. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. The nationwide “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign is currently underway through June 2. During the campaign, Louisiana State Police and other law enforcement agencies across the nation are providing additional enforcement of our seatbelt and child restraint laws. Louisiana state law requires that occupants in all seating positions to be properly restrained both day and night. According to a 2011 NHTSA survey, most people buckle up when officers begin writing more tickets, and many drivers continue the habit after the enforcement period ends.
