TROOP A NEWS RELEASE November 30, 2012 Baton Rouge - This evening shortly after 8:15 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a multiple vehicle fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on LA Hwy 42 (Burbank Dr.) near Elvin Rd. in East Baton Rouge Parish. The incident took the life of 18 year old Baton Rouge resident Lawrence J. Kelson. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that prior to the crash Kelson was in a physical altercation at the Cracker Barrel service station located at Burbank Dr. and Elvin Street. For unknown reasons, Kelson (who was nude at the time) ran out the store and attempted to steal a vehicle in the parking lot. After the unsuccessful attempt of getting the vehicle started, Kelson ran to Burbank Dr. and lied down in the middle of the road where he was struck by three vehicles, ultimately causing fatal injuries. Intoxication on the part of Kelson is unknown at this time; however, Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Kelson to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians. Motorists must remain alert at all times and pay close attention to their surroundings. Contact Information: TFC Jared L.
