Speed / Impairment Suspected in Livingston Parish Fatality

Frost - This evening shortly before 7:00 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA 42 east of LA 63 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 56 year old Gonzales resident Harold G. Crawford.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Crawford was driving a 1996 Saturn SL west on LA 42. Crawford failed to negotiate a right hand curve, and his vehicle left the roadway. After leaving the roadway, Crawford’s vehicle entered a ditch and struck a group of trees on the driver’s side.

Crawford was seriously injured and was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries from the crash. Crawford was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Troopers suspect drug impairment and excessive speed to be factors in the crash. A toxicology sample from Crawford has been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Troopers remind drivers that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Troopers have seen the number of deaths and serious injuries due to impaired drivers decrease in recent years, but there is still work to be done. Troopers will continue to enforce Louisiana’s DWI laws across the state and remain committed to a public education campaign to end impaired driving. Have a plan and designate a driver before you decide to operate a vehicle while impaired.
