TROOP A NEWS RELEASE January 6, 2018 15 Year Old Driver Dead After Fiery Crash in Ascension Parish Prairieville – Shortly after 1:00 am on December 6, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 10 westbound west of LA 73 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 15 year old Jessie Chaney of Denham Springs. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Chaney was traveling westbound on I-10 in a 2004 Infiniti G35. Chaney was traveling at a high rate of speed when his left rear tire failed and he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle then burst into flames with Chaney still inside. One of Chaney’s passengers was unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. Chaney sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. Chaney had a total of four passengers in the vehicle and they are being treated for moderate to serious injuries. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from Chaney for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
