I-10 Fatal Crash Takes the Life of League City, TX Man

Prairieville - This evening shortly after 3:00 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on I-10 west of LA 73 near the Bluff Rd. overpass in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 64 year old David L. Hammer of League City, TX.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 35 year old Michael B. Munson of Donaldsonville was driving a 2001 Ford F-350 west on I-10. At the same time, Hammer was driving a 1998 Ford F-150 east on I-10. Munson was towing an empty utility trailer behind his truck, and for unknown reasons the trailer became unattached from his vehicle. After disconnecting from the truck, the trailer crossed the median through an opening between the median cable barriers and a guardrail. The trailer then entered the eastbound lanes of travel and struck the F-150 driven by Hammer. Hammers’ vehicle then left the roadway to the right, crossed back across the eastbound lanes of travel, and came to rest against the median cable barriers.

Despite the fact that he was wearing his seatbelt, Hammer sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Troopers do not suspect impairment on the part of either driver to be a factor in the crash; however, Troopers have submitted toxicology samples from both Munson and Hammer to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation by Troop A.

There have been several fatal crashes in the Troop A area over the past week. The common factor in each of these crashes was that they were all avoidable. Motorists should remain vigilant at all times while behind the wheel and follow all the rules of the road. Following the posted speed limit, never driving beyond the vehicle’s capabilities, always driving defensively, and never taking your eyes off the road are just a few ways to increase safety and decrease the chances of a motor vehicle crash occurring. While not all crashes are survivable, it is important to note that the single most effective way to minimize the chance of serious injury or death in a crash is to be properly restrained at all times.
