| TROOP A NEWS RELEASE December 16, 2012 Single Vehicle Crash Claims Life of 18 Year Old Morganza Man Fordoche - This afternoon at approximately 12:00 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA 77 south of LA 81 in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash took the life of 18 year old Morganza teenager Hunter T. Kirkland. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Kirkland was driving a 2006 GMC Sierra south on LA 77. For unknown reasons Kirkland failed to negotiate a left hand curve, and his vehicle ran off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway, Kirkland overcorrected causing his vehicle to cross back across both lanes of LA 77. The GMC exited the roadway and struck a utility pole. Despite the fact that he was wearing his seatbelt, Kirkland sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Driver impairment is unknown at this time; however, Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Kirkland to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Motorists should remain vigilant at all times while behind the wheel and follow all the rules of the road. Following the posted speed limit, never driving beyond the vehicle’s capabilities, always driving defensively, and never taking your eyes off the road are just a few ways to increase safety and decrease the chances of a motor vehicle crash occurring. While not all crashes are survivable, it is important to note that the single most effective way to minimize the chance of serious injury or death in a crash is to be properly restrained at all times.
