The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Brown was traveling eastbound on LA 68 in a 2001 Honda Accord. For unknown reasons, Brown crossed the double yellow line into the westbound lane and began passing a 2016 Toyota Camry driven by 27 year old Trematice Duncan of St. Francisville. At the same time Brown was passing, 48 year old Melin Chandler of Liberty, MS was traveling westbound on LA 68 in a 2005 Freightliner. Brown’s vehicle collided head-on with Chandler’s vehicle in the westbound lane. Chandler’s vehicle began to overturn and spilled logs across both lanes of LA 68 striking Duncan’s vehicle.

Brown was properly restrained, but was ejected from the vehicle due to the severity of the crash. Brown sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the East Feliciana Parish Coroner’s Office. Chandler was properly restrained and was not injured. Duncan was also properly restrained and sustained minor injuries. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash, but a toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that while not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
