TROOP A NEWS RELEASE

Impairment Possible Factor in Crash that Kills Father/Son

Chenal – Shortly before 11:30 pm on May 9, 2013, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 415 near the southbound intersection of LA Hwy 414 in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash took the lives of 47 year old Jarreau resident Sidney R. Morel and his father, 68 year old Sidney J. Morel, also of Jarreau.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as the 47 year old Morel was driving a 2007 Ford pickup southbound on LA Hwy 415. For unknown reasons, Morel failed to negotiate a left hand curve, and the Ford ran off of the roadway to the right. Morel overcorrected, causing the vehicle to exit the roadway to the left and overturn several times.

Despite the fact that they were wearing seatbelts, both father and son sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Troopers suspect impairment on the part of the younger Morel to have been a factor in the crash, and have submitted a toxicology sample from him to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Troopers wish to remind drivers that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Troopers will continue to enforce Louisiana’s DWI laws across the state and remain committed to a public education campaign to end impaired driving. Have a plan and designate a driver before you decide to operate a vehicle while impaired.
