Attorney General Liz Murrill is highlighting House Bill 335, one of the 24 bills included in her landmark legislative package adopted during the 2026 Regular Legislative Session. Authored by Representative Chance Henry, the new law requires non-governmental organizations (NGOs) administering taxpayer-funded public assistance to verify the citizenship of individuals receiving such assistance.

The new requirements are a continuation of efforts by Attorney General Murrill to protect the hard-earned tax dollars of the men and women of Louisiana and combat public assistance fraud. Similar efforts are also being made in other states and at the federal level by the Trump administration following high-profile fraud scandals in places such as Minnesota.

“The State of Louisiana provides public benefits to those in need. They are paid for by the hard-working men and women of Louisiana who get up every morning and go to work to provide for their families. They belong to the people of Louisiana and those who actually qualify,” said Attorney General Murrill.

What the new law does:

• Continued Efforts. This law is a continuation of Act 351, adopted during the 2025 session, which requires citizenship verification for individuals requesting public assistance from any state agency or political subdivision.
• Extends citizenship verification requirements to NGOs. HB 335 extends the same requirement to NGOs before providing taxpayer-funded assistance, applying the same standard already required of state agencies and other entities providing taxpayer-funded assistance.

“Louisiana taxpayers fund these programs, and they deserve to know the money is reaching people who actually qualify. I’m grateful to the Attorney General’s Office for standing behind this law,” said State Representative Chance Henry, District 42.

HB 335 became Act 795 and took effect on August 1, 2026.
