As the 2026 hurricane season begins, Attorney General Liz Murrill encourages all Louisianans to stay alert, be prepared, and take steps now to protect their families, homes, and property.

According to forecasters within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Service, the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be below-normal overall. NOAA’s outlook predicts a 55% chance of a below-normal season, a 35% chance of a near-normal season, and a 10% chance of an above-normal season.

While overall activity may be lower than in recent years, Attorney General Murrill reminds residents that it only takes one storm to cause devastating impacts.

“The first step in staying safe is preparing before a storm threatens Louisiana. That means making sure your insurance is up to date, developing an evacuation and communication plan for your family, and stocking up on supplies ahead of time,” said Attorney General Liz Murrill.

Below, General Murrill provides tips for preparing and staying safe before, during, and after a natural disaster.

Here are a few things you can do today:

• Become familiar with evacuation routes in your area
• Review your renters or homeowners insurance policy
• Safeguard personal documents in a secure, waterproof location
• Take preventive steps such as cleaning gutters, trimming trees, and ensuring vehicles are in working condition
• Take photos or videos of your home and belongings for insurance purposes
• Assemble disaster supply kits for at least three days
• Create a family communication plan in case of power loss or evacuation

Pet preparedness is also important:

• Update pet ID tags and consider permanent identification such as microchipping
• Identify pet-friendly evacuation locations in advance
• Prepare supplies including food, medication, records, crates, and leashes or harnesses
